The project concentrates all building volume required for the redensification of the cooperative housing site on the northern side of the plot, along the topographical edge to the inner city of Lucern. The 54 apartments are united within an efficient and flexible large-scale-form, which is zoned and broken up by balconies, pergolas, and passageways. With just two elevators, all resulting levels are accessible and connected to the existing settlement via a new network of paths. This creates a surprisingly spacious communal courtyard with a wealth of functions and the potential to accommodate the community’s future needs.
In addition to the required variety of apartment sizes, three different building depths and grid widths also create diversity within the sizes. The central hallway serves at times as a repurposed and efficient hub within the apartments, and at other times as an important gathering space and foyer. This creates a whole matrix of unit options, ranging from compact 3-room units for couples with home offices to family-friendly variants where the foyer becomes a “bonus room.”
