The project to increase the density of the WOBA 1930 site is both a self-assured prototype in the tradition of modern founder’s estates and a significant building block in the urban fabric. Within the context of Hans Bernoulli’s development plan, existing outdoor space qualities are further developed, existing spatial offerings are complemented in a contemporary manner, and two new buildings are designed as sustainable, adaptive structures. Emerging from a multi-stage, collective workshop process led by the City of Basel and the Cantonal Heritage Preservation Authority, the project establishes a new clarity of urban design within this complex context. The shift in scale between the two-storey show homes and the four-storey townhouses on the neighbouring plot should not be seen as a break with the site, but rather as a logical continuation and updating of its heterogeneous character.
The model housing estate, built in 1930, comprises 13 houses, all featuring a uniform design and fittings that were considered progressive for their time. It addressed the shortage of affordable, family-friendly housing through a systematic approach and the promise of ‘New Living’. To mark its centenary, it is being expanded with the ‘WOBA 2030’ extension. Whilst the existing development makes full use of the site’s floor area, the extension consistently seeks to build upwards. The tall building balances external factors (such as the specific noise situation and the angles at which light falls on the neighbouring properties) with the internal logic of a sufficient, long-term flexible structure. Spanning ten storeys, it gives rise to new prototypical forms of living and complementary facilities. The building’s public façade emerges from the geometry of the site and turns invitingly towards the city.
