For almost 100 years, the House Eber stood alone opposite the slaughterhouse between the bus depot and Letzigrund Stadium as a lonely fragment of speculative urban development and an unfulfilled promise of Zurich's northern expansion. The perimeter block development along Hohlstrasse has reached Herdernstrasse – however, the quarter between Badenerstrasse, Eichbühlstrasse, and Hardstrasse was developed early on with buildings of extraordinary scale, such as the bus depot and the Hardau high-rises, and can now be seen as a heterogeneous superblock.
The architectural continuation of the fragment proposes a further reinterpretation of the Eber building and another change of scale. The slender, light extension blends naturally with the fire walls of the existing building and forms an intimate atrium. It complements it through subtle approximation and contrast, features a similar structure and rhythm to the façade, and remains true to its radical nature in terms of typology and organization. The stone Eber House thus gains a new self-image as a fragment, and its history is continued through a simply constructed, ephemeral architecture. The whole becomes a city villa, a detached residential building for many parties. Between architectural complexity and clear allocation of space, a sufficient, high-quality living space is created.
