62 Haus In Uster Built

The Flarz is a vernacular building type typical of the Zurich Oberland region. The densely packed units arose from the need for living space on agricultural land. The house on Bachgasse was remodelled several times over the decades. In response to the precarious room height of 2.05 metres, the circulation to the house was reinterpreted by rebuilding the damaged rear rooms. Instead of a compact staircase and a small adjoining room, the new vertical circulation spreads out as a topographical landscape and blurs the boundaries between movement and use. Unexpectedly generous spatial relationships and lateral views as well as a flowing movement from the entrance to the roof become possible. The activation of all steps as structural beams is based on a constructive examination of the complex geometry. The design in sprayed concrete enables a resource- and space-saving realisation with a ceiling thickness of only 55 mm.
